Addiction and Trauma: A Close Relationship

EMDR Professional Training™ presents Susan Brown's online course “Part of me wants to quit, and part of me doesn't": An Integrative Developmental Approach to Addiction. Addiction and Trauma:  A Close Relationship Susan Brown discovered early in her career that if she was going to help clients make real changes in their lives, she had to address addiction. “If you’re dealing with addiction, you’re going to find trauma somewhere underneath,” says Susan of the landscape of trauma and its close relationship with addictive behaviors. “You will often find that a client's struggle with addiction is their best attempt to deal with a problem, and they’re not going to give up that solution, until they discover a better one,” says Brown.  “When EMDR therapy came along, it was like magic because we finally had something to treat underlying trauma." EMDR Therapy is Effective

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is known to be an effective form of psychotherapy. At EMDR Professional Training™, we believe one sustaining fact that makes our work very purposeful:  EMDR therapy is effective. How Do We Know EMDR Therapy is Effective? Ongoing research continues to confirm the efficacy of EMDR therapy, especially in its treatment of trauma-related conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depressive or anxious comorbid symptoms. For example, in the article titled, “Efficacy of Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing in Children and Adolescents with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder:  A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials” (2017), Moreno-Alcázar, et.al. concluded that, from a meta-analysis of eight studies, “EMDR therapy was superior” to other conditions.  Add to this research and many more studies like it with similar results, the recommendations of entities such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of Defense (2017), where both [...]

From Fear to Healing

EMDR therapy processes from fear to healing with eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. Learn more with EMDR Professional Training courses. Underlying Traumas are NOT Irrational Fears Of course, unplanned, unannounced, physical and emotional, and recurring traumas are why we’ve all landed in this work.  While it would be nice if everyone could decide when to be frightened, scared, or traumatized, we might be out of work (and thankfully so).   But the fact is, trauma occurs without warning, and for many, [...]
