Essential EMDR Therapy

In the past few months we’ve been talking about EMDR Therapy and highlighting the three words in EMDR Professional Training's tagline:  Engaging. Effective. Essential. We've talked about the first two. Now it's time for the third. So why use the term Essential? The answer is two-fold. EMDR Therapy is Essential. First, we use the term essential because of what we believe about EMDR Therapy.  Oddly, we’ve heard that word quite a lot lately, from essential businesses to essential services and workers.  We’ve been inundated with messages telling us what we have to do just to survive. But some have been just surviving for quite a while.  They’ve been barely living in the wake of the severe traumas of their past.  At EMDR Professional Training™ we’d like to see the end of just surviving.  We believe EMDR Therapy is the answer to unlocking the keys to heal past trauma.  And [...]

Mental Health in a COVID-19 World

May is considered Mental Health Awareness Month in the U.S.  Traditionally, it’s a yearly reminder to take care of our mental health in a variety of ways to support the whole person.  For instance, in 2018, Psychology Today featured an article that listed ways to care for your mental well-being with several suggestions related to food and exercise for better overall health.  See the list here. Other sources have also included suggested therapeutic activities such as coloring or taking walks. While these suggestions are certainly good advice (yes, hydrate and try some probiotics), it’s not the full list by any means.  Of course, those of us working in the mental health profession know much more is needed to help people move from just ok to thriving. Be More than OK EMDR Therapy is the key to true healing from past traumas. We often see, with the use of traditional therapies, clients [...]

EMDR and the Art of Psychotherapy with Children

EMDR and the Art of Psychotherapy with Children:  A Workshop with Dr. Robbie Adler-Tapia “Kids are resilient,” we often hear people say when they speak of the hardships children may face.  They bounce back from trauma, family crisis, and health challenges with relative ease. Or do they? Most of us know that children do suffer from trauma even though it may manifest differently than in adults.  That’s why we must approach the protocols of EMDR therapy with children in mind. Enter Robbie Adler-Tapia, Ph.D. Robbie Adler-Tapia is a licensed psychologist in Tempe, Arizona, where she works with children and families encountering trauma, attachment challenges, adoption, and child welfare issues. Dr. Adler-Tapia also serves forensically as an expert witness in the Juvenile and Family Courts.  She advocates for children, resilient or not. Now you can train with this expert in the field at a new workshop offered by EMDR Professional [...]

Addiction and Trauma: A Close Relationship

EMDR Professional Training™ presents Susan Brown's online course “Part of me wants to quit, and part of me doesn't": An Integrative Developmental Approach to Addiction. Addiction and Trauma:  A Close Relationship Susan Brown discovered early in her career that if she was going to help clients make real changes in their lives, she had to address addiction. “If you’re dealing with addiction, you’re going to find trauma somewhere underneath,” says Susan of the landscape of trauma and its close relationship with addictive behaviors. “You will often find that a client's struggle with addiction is their best attempt to deal with a problem, and they’re not going to give up that solution, until they discover a better one,” says Brown.  “When EMDR therapy came along, it was like magic because we finally had something to treat underlying trauma."
