What Happens During an EMDR Consultation Session What Happens During an EMDR Consultation Session

For mental health professionals pursuing EMDRIA certification or seeking to deepen their clinical expertise, EMDR consultation is not merely a procedural requirement; it is a cornerstone of competent, ethical trauma practice.

Understanding what occurs during these sessions and why they are integral to professional development can help clinicians approach consultation with greater intention and derive maximum value from the experience.

Understanding EMDR Consultation

EMDR consultation is a structured, professionally supervised process in which a trained clinician receives expert guidance from an EMDRIA Approved Consultant. It is important to distinguish consultation from EMDR therapy itself.  While therapy is centered on the client's healing, consultation is designed expressly to develop the clinician's knowledge, clinical reasoning, and technical proficiency.

The consultation process serves therapists across multiple levels of professional development:

  • Clinicians completing EMDR Basic Training who are beginning to apply protocols in practice.  Ten hours of consultation are required by EMDRIA.  These hours are included in EMDR Professional Training’s Basic Training program.
  • Therapists working toward EMDRIA certification and fulfilling required consultation hours.  A total of 20 hours are required by EMDRIA.
  • Experienced EMDR practitioners navigating complex or treatment-resistant cases.

In each context, consultation provides the expert clinical framework that formal training alone cannot fully deliver.

Why EMDR Consultation Is Essential

The gap between academic knowledge and applied clinical skill is well-documented in the trauma therapy literature. EMDR consultation exists precisely to bridge that gap.

  • Developing Clinical Competence: Applying EMDR protocols effectively requires more than theoretical understanding. Consultants support therapists in refining their treatment planning, sharpening case conceptualization, and strengthening their capacity to work through challenging clinical presentations with precision and confidence.
  • Upholding Ethical and Safe Practice: Trauma treatment demands sound clinical judgment, particularly around client readiness, trauma stabilization, and the recognition of dissociative symptoms. Consultation provides a structured space to assess these factors and adjust treatment pacing in alignment with best practices, reducing clinical risk for both therapist and client.
  • Fulfilling EMDRIA Basic Training and Certification Standards: EMDRIA mandates a defined number of consultation hours with an approved consultant as part of both EMDR Basic Training and within the certification process. Engaging with a qualified EMDRIA Approved Consultant ensures not only that these hours are properly credited, but that they translate into measurable clinical growth.

What Occurs During an EMDR Consultation Session

While session structure may vary depending on the consultant and format, most EMDR consultation sessions encompass the following core components:

  • Case Presentation and Clinical Discussion: Clinicians present active cases, including relevant history, current treatment phase, and any points of clinical difficulty. The consultant offers an informed, objective perspective, helping identify obstacles to progress and refining the overall treatment approach.
  • Protocol Review and Target Sequencing: Consultants evaluate how EMDR protocols are being applied and provide guidance on adherence to the eight-phase model, appropriate modifications for complex presentations, and optimal strategies for sequencing traumatic targets.
  • Structured Clinical Feedback: Consultants deliver specific, constructive feedback tailored to each clinician's cases and developmental needs. This may include exploring alternative interventions, addressing blocking beliefs within the therapeutic process, and supporting the therapist in managing complex client presentations such as dissociation or severe emotional dysregulation.
  • Peer Learning in Group Settings: Group consultation offers an additional dimension of professional development. Exposure to diverse case presentations and shared clinical reasoning across colleagues broadens each participant's perspective and strengthens the profession's collective knowledge base.

Individual vs. Group EMDR Consultation

Both consultation formats offer distinct professional advantages, and many clinicians engage in both throughout their development.

Individual consultation provides a focused, one-to-one environment with direct feedback specific to the clinician's cases and learning needs. It is particularly well-suited for therapists working through complex client situations or requiring more intensive, personalized support.  Individual consultation is available within the Certification module at EMDR Professional Training.  Per EMDRIA, Clinicians may choose up to all 20 hours as individual consultation.

Group consultation fosters a collaborative professional environment in which shared clinical experiences serve as rich learning opportunities. The breadth of case exposure, combined with the collegial dynamic, can accelerate clinical development in ways that individual consultation alone may not replicate, and it typically offers a more accessible cost structure.  Group consultation is available within the Certification program at EMDR Professional Training.  Per EMDRIA, Clinicians may choose up to 10 hours as group consultation.

Preparing for an EMDR Consultation Session

Clinicians who approach consultation with deliberate preparation consistently report greater benefit from the process. Key preparation practices include:

  • Organizing case documentation. A concise summary of the client's clinical history, current EMDR phase, and specific areas of difficulty enables productive and focused discussion.  Within EMDR Basic Training a Case Consultation template is provided for clinicians to follow so there’s no guesswork.
  • Formulating specific questions. Identifying points of uncertainty before the session ensures that consultation addresses the clinician's most pressing developmental needs.
  • Approaching feedback with openness. Consultation is a professional learning environment, not a performance evaluation. Clinicians who engage with intellectual humility and curiosity advance most rapidly.
  • Maintaining client confidentiality. In accordance with HIPAA standards and professional ethical codes, all identifying client information must be appropriately de-identified prior to case presentation.  EMDRIA Approved Consultants take clinicians through this process.

The Professional Value of EMDR Consultation

Clinicians who engage consistently and intentionally in EMDR consultation report measurable improvements in clinical skill, greater diagnostic confidence, and stronger client outcomes.

Beyond meeting certification requirements, consultation is an investment in the quality of care provided to some of the most vulnerable client populations, those carrying the weight of significant trauma histories.

EMDR consultation is a professional development experience that reflects a clinician's commitment to excellence in trauma-informed care.
